North Eastern State Ministry Participates in National Clean Cooking Strategy Consultation

Representatives from the Ministry of Energy & Water Resources of the North Eastern State of Somalia actively participated in the Federal Member State Consultation Workshop held to support the development of Somalia’s National Clean Cooking Strategy (NCCS).

The consultation brought together representatives from Federal Member States, the Federal Government, development partners and technical experts to discuss priorities and recommendations that will contribute to the formulation of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at expanding access to clean cooking solutions across the country.

The workshop focused on harmonising the perspectives of the Federal Member States to ensure that regional priorities and local realities are adequately reflected in the National Clean Cooking Strategy. Participants discussed the importance of increasing access to affordable, efficient and environmentally sustainable cooking technologies while addressing the health, environmental and economic challenges associated with traditional cooking methods.

During the meeting, technical experts presented the preliminary findings of the Clean Cooking Baseline Assessment, which evaluated current cooking practices, fuel consumption patterns, access to clean cooking technologies and the major barriers preventing wider adoption of modern cooking solutions throughout Somalia.

Representatives from the Ministry of Energy & Water Resources contributed to the discussions by sharing experiences and challenges from the Sool, Sanaag and Cayn regions. They highlighted the need for practical and locally appropriate clean cooking technologies that can improve household health, reduce dependence on biomass fuels and protect the environment.

Participants also provided technical recommendations to strengthen the National Clean Cooking Strategy, including increasing public awareness, promoting investment in clean energy technologies, supporting private sector participation and improving access to affordable clean cooking equipment, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The consultation concluded with a shared commitment among participants to continue collaborating throughout the strategy development process. The recommendations gathered during the workshop will be incorporated into the final National Clean Cooking Strategy, which is expected to serve as a roadmap for expanding access to clean, safe and sustainable cooking solutions across Somalia.
